Press Release of the Organizing Committee (OC)

The semifinals between Germany and Spain will be held in Merano, as stated in the programme. This was decided this morning in a meeting between the OC and the EHF.

Before this meeting the OC seriously discussed, in a special conference, the possiblity of transferring the semifinals between GER-ESP to Bozen. The German Handball Association had suggested to the OC to transfer the match in the bigger sports hall in Bolzano. Many phonecalls from German fans underlined the urgency of this request.

Because of the audience’s great interest in this game, one realized that the sportshall in Merano would probably not be big enough for the amount of tickets requested. On the other hand such a decision would have caused many organisational problems, particularly if one considers that many tickets have already been pre-sold for the semifinals in Bolzano. It would have been hardly possible to inform everyone on time about the change of programme.

The OC checked all technical aspects, particularly those concerning the pre-sold tickets, as well as other organisational consequences, which a change of location would have brought about. After various discussions with the representatives of Merano and Bolzano, the OC decided that a transfer would be desirable but unfortunately not feasible.

In a following talk with the leaders of the EHF this decision was announced and again discussed. The president of the EHF, Staffan Holmqvist, agreed, that, considering all aspects, a transfer of the matches and the game times would in this case be neither desirable, nor necessary.

The OC ageed as already mentioned- with this decision.
