In South-Tyrol, handball numbers among the most important team sports. Hardly any other Region of Italy has as many top teams. In the first place there is the SSV Brixen Forst who has been playing in the highest division for 23 years and who was champion in 1991 and 1992. The SC MeraNatura is the second team that plays in the A-1 division. The greatest success of the team of Meran was the participation in the 1995 finals. In the second division, the A-2 one, there are two South-Tyrolean teams, too: the traditional SSV Bozen Loacker club and this year's newcomer, the Neff SSV Taufers. Besides these male teams, there is also a female team, the SSV Brixen who, after a three-year break, plays in the A-1 division. In the eighties, Brixen was the most successful female team in South-Tyrol, winning seven national championships consecutively between 1978 and 1985.
Already in 1987 the Region of Trentino - South-Tyrol was the centre of the handball events, i. e. when the B World Championship was held in Bozen/Bolzano, Brixen/Bressanone, Meran/Merano and Rovereto. That championship counted as qualification for the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988. The final, which was played in the sports hall in Bozen between the Czech Republic and Russia, was won by the latter team.
