How the Championship was assigned to the South-Tyrol

In spring 1998 the third European Handball Championship will be held in South-Tyrol. It was assigned to Italy during the Congress of the European Handball Federation in Athens in March 1996. Italy was able to push through her application at the ballot of the EHF-delegates and obtain the organization of this Championship. The other competitors were Sweden (9 votes), Norway (7 votes) and Austria (1 vote).

Originally Rimini and Pesaro were chosen as venues. But owing to financial and logistic problems, the organizers in those two cities had to step down and the Italian Handball Federation (FIGH) had to look for another organizer.

Besides the Region of Trentino - South-Tyrol with its four clubs SSV Bozen, SSV Brixen, SC Meran and HC Rovereto, also Bari and Conversano in Apulia applied for the European Championship. In April 1997 the Region of Trentino - South-Tyrol obtained the organization of the games.
